GODFATHER PROJECT

Restoring Dignity. Providing Fatherhood. Changing Lives.

The Godfather Project is a life-changing social intervention initiative created to support vulnerable young single mothers in Ghana who have been abandoned by their partners or left to raise children without financial, emotional, or parental support. Many of these women are forced to carry the entire burden of parenthood alone, often at the expense of their education, career aspirations, emotional well-being, and long-term stability. The Godfather Project exists to change that reality.

At the heart of the initiative is a simple but powerful mission: no child should suffer because a parent walked away, and no mother should be left alone to carry the burden of raising a child without support. Through this project, we step in to provide the stability, care, and support system that many families desperately need.

The Godfather Project is not designed to replace families, but to stand in the gap where support is absent. It is a compassionate response to the growing number of vulnerable mothers and children who are often overlooked by existing systems. By creating a structured support network around both mother and child, the project helps families regain stability, dignity, and hope for a better future.

Ultimately, The Godfather Project is about more than charity—it is about transformation. It is about giving children a fair chance at life, helping mothers rebuild their futures, and creating communities where responsibility, compassion, and human dignity are shared values.

One child supported. One mother empowered. One life changed at a time.

The Challenge

In Ghana, teenage motherhood and single-parent caregiving remain significant social challenges with long-term consequences for women, children, and communities. According to the 2022 Ghana Demographic and Health Survey (GDHS), approximately 10.9% of girls aged 15–19 have had a live birth, with the percentage increasing sharply among older adolescents. Research published in peer-reviewed journals further shows that adolescent pregnancy and motherhood in Ghana are strongly associated with poverty, limited education, and low household income, especially in rural communities.

Many of these young mothers are left to carry the overwhelming responsibility of raising children alone, often without financial, emotional, or educational support from the fathers of their children. While Ghana has maintenance and custody provisions under family law, enforcement mechanisms remain weak and inaccessible for many women, particularly those in underserved communities. This leaves many mothers solely responsible for childcare, healthcare, feeding, and education expenses. The burden frequently limits their ability to continue schooling, secure stable employment, or pursue personal and professional development opportunities.

The social and economic effects are far-reaching. UNICEF Ghana reports that adolescent childbearing is significantly higher among girls from poor households and rural areas, reinforcing cycles of poverty and reduced educational attainment. Without adequate support systems, many young women are forced to abandon their ambitions and survival becomes the priority over long-term growth and stability.

These realities highlight the urgent need for stronger community support systems, educational opportunities, mentorship programs, and policies that protect vulnerable mothers and children while encouraging shared parental responsibility.

Our Solution

The project assumes key fatherly responsibilities for the child while allowing the child to remain safely in the care and custody of the mother. Through the Godfather project, a vulnerable child:

  • Receives full financial and parental support.
  • Gains a legal father through adoption to compliment the biological mother’s parental efforts.
  • Receives educational support from daycare to college/university.
  • Receives healthcare, feeding, and clothing support.

Beyond child support, the project is equally committed to restoring hope and dignity to the mothers themselves by empowering the mothers toward independence and stability.

The project also allows biological fathers to reclaim responsibility of their children under strict conditions that ensures accountability and fairness.

PROGRAM GOALS

  • Provide a consistent and responsible father figure.
  • Reduce the burden on young single mothers.
  • Enable mothers to focus on personal and professional growth.
  • Promote accountability among biological fathers.

EXPECTED IMPACTS

  • Improved health and educational outcomes for children.
  • Reduced stress and financial burden on mothers.
  • A scalable model for addressing child support gaps in Ghana.
